BEFORE YOU CONTACT A PROVIDER

Make the first conversation count.

  1. Explain what you need now.

Share your county, household size, current housing situation, accessibility needs, and a safe way to reach you. Ask whether the program serves your location.

  2. Ask about the next step.

Check intake hours, availability, eligibility, required documents, and whether another provider can help if capacity is full. Ask about transport if an in-person visit is required.

  3. Gather documents if you have them.

A lease, notices, identification, and income information may be useful. Ask the provider what is required and what alternatives exist if documents are missing.

  4. Keep a note of the conversation.

Record the organization, person you spoke with, next appointment, and requested documents. Use a safe device and keep sensitive paperwork private.
